At a time when Miss Nepal Beauty Pageant 2008 was postponed for an indefinite period in the capital largely due to the Maoist's pressure, a beauty pageant was organised here on Sunday for homosexuals in a bid to bring public awareness on the rights of sexual minorities.
The Maoist affiliated women's organisation left no stone unturned in exerting pressure on the organisers to stop the contest claiming that such beauty pageants have been using women as commercial objects.
However, Federation of Sexual and Gender Minorities organised Homosexual Beauty and Brain Talent 2008 here at Narayangadh with the objective of raising public awareness.
The organisers claimed that such a beauty contest will help to create awareness about the rights of sexual minorities and to prevent HIV/AIDS.
Nine lesbians from various parts of Central Development Region were contestants in the beauty pageant. The contestants declared from the stage that such a contest would not lead to gender exploitation.
"Instead, these kinds of programmes really help in creating awareness among the people about their rights," they claimed univocally.
Susma KC of Narayangadh was crowned with the title defeating eight fellow friends.
Likewise, Sandhya Lama of Kathmandu and Jyoti Thapa of Bhaktapur were declared first and second runner-ups respectively in the contest.
