Yes, college reports to SEVIS about ur information thereby keeping u in status from Jan to August. Unless ur information is updated in SEVIS by 90th day of ur OPT start date, u r out of status.

We have been going through our OPT files and have noticed that you have
not reported your employer to us. Please be aware that you must be
employed within 90 days of the start date on your EAD card and you must
report your employer and their address to us so we can have it recored
in SEVIS by the 90th day. You will be considered out of status on the
91st day if you have not begun your employment or your employer has not
yet been recored.
